In light of relation, preaching can be defined as “a personal transaction” by God’s grace. The encounter brings about the event of hearing the word of God because of relational and personal God. This paper argues that authentic preaching comes from the preacher’s experience of hearing God’s word. For this reason, preachers need to hear God’s word while reading and studying their sermon texts, in order that their listeners may hear it through their sermons. The author deals with such questions as ‘how preachers can hear God’s word through their studies of sermon texts?’ or ‘what practices or guidelines they should follow for their text reading or studying?’ It suggests that lectio divina, sacred reading, will be a very helpful practice for preachers who want to prepare for and preach their sermons with the word which God speaks through their texts. Lectio divina is an ancient practice of reading and meditating the Bible with prayer. It enables preachers to promote the encounter with God and listen to the word of God through a text as well. For the event of hearing God’s word by way of studying sermon texts for preaching, the paper provides preachers with the three preachers’ homiletical suggestions of how to read and study Biblical texts for preaching. The three are John R. W. Stott, J. Kent Edwards and Lisa K. Cressmann. Their homiletical options in the process of sermon preparation will help preachers effectively deliver their sermons in the pulpit after hearing God’s word through Bible study.
